I’m in the middle of a project discovering secular children’s books that can be used in a faith context. Its a follow on from some work I did a few years ago looking at all the new books that have appeared since then. And there are lots!! I have chanced upon a whole new set of books over the past few days and am so excited to share some of them with you . So time for a new series I think!
Each week I’ll post a Weekly Read. A great children’s book with a lovely meaning behind it. Starting with……
The Penguin and the Pinecone (a friendship story) by Salina Yoon for Bloomsbury Paperbacks.
One day Penguin finds a curious object in the snow. Its a lost pinecone. They soon become great friends. But though Penguin knits him a scarf Pinecone is still too cold to live in the snowy land. So Penguin has to return him to the forest.
Penguin misses his friend terribly and so later returns to the forest to find Pinecone. When he gets there he makes an amazing discovery. Pinecone has grown into a great tree and so a great friend to play with.
A beautifully written and illustrated book. Last night I read it to T and at the end she clapped!
