Playing More – small world play

Over on Nurture Store they are beginning the year with a Simple Play::Complex Learning series. A month of play based learning activities going back to basics and putting play at the heart of childhood. They are sharing prompts ideas and resources and you can share yours via their Facebook community. Today the focus is on small world play.

Playmobil, Lego and other small world sets are big in our house. So over Christmas I created a Nativity discovery box for T and for use at various times.

I used an Early Learning Centre nativity set I bought years ago which is great for tiny hands. Also in the box were wooden animal figures, pots and an olive spoon for pouring the rice, a soft sheep, wooden blocks and fences.

I simply dyed the uncooked rice with green food colouring (don’t use gel as it will stain) and placed it in a large storage tub. Then added everything else and left it out.

T played for a long time pouring the rice while others re-enacted the story. It became a very popular feature over the Christmas period and a great way of little ones engaging with the story.
