Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve with 2 small boys is a tighrope walk between anticipation and ‘meltdown’! But we have made it through the day – and learnt a little along the way.

Countdown proper began with the 4pm crib service – the boys had been excited all day about bringing the nativity set to church. G is really clear this year that the reason baby Jesus was special is that he was the Son of God. And he is really clear that that is what we celebrate at Christmas.

But he is also clear that Santa has a part in Christmas too. We returned home and spread reindeer food in the street for rudolph and friends; put out mince pies and carrots for Santa and his reindeer; hung stockings and read The Night Before Christmas.

As adults we often struggle to fit the nativity and Santa into the same festival. Or we get cross about the ‘secularisation’ of Christmas. Yet children naturally accept both and have no problem distinguishing the 2. They have a lot to teach us as adults!

So all it remains to say is,

‘Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night!’
